Description

Casper the Friendly Ghost was the first broadband nebula I had photographed when I first got into astrophotography two years ago.  At the time, I had done it with the Hyperstar, which was a lot of fun to see things take shape so quickly but at that focal length I came to realize that I wasn't getting nearly as much fine detail as I could achieve at f/7 or f/10 with the EdgeHD 11".  I had attempted to shoot at f/10 but got nowhere fast because of such a slow speed.  After fine-tuning my setup and realizing that most of my "tilt" problem with the f/7 reducer was actually fan vibration from the camera, I decided to move forwards at attempting a mosaic of M78, which is something I thought about doing for several years.

This ended up being more of a challenge than I predicted due to field curvature, trees and wind!  If I was lucky, I would get 4 hours per night.  After over a month of waiting, scrapping subs, reshooting and experimentation, I finally had enough data to stitch together.  The process crashed my computer on several occasions, so this image has also gotten me interested in building a new computer at some point soon...

After all this, here we have M78, as close up as I can obtain in my backyard.
