The Rosette Nebula (Caldwell 49) is a diffuse emission nebula in the constellation of monoceros. It is 5200 light-years from Earth and 130 light-years across. The open star cluster (NGC 2244) in the center of the nebula originated from the nebula and makes it glow as an ionizing source. Overall, it has a mass of 10,000 solar masses and consists of H-II (ionized atomic hydrogen). Measurements by the Chandra telescope have revealed that the dense nebula hosts up to 2500 young stars, including two massive O-type stars that are primarily responsible for the ejection of the ionized dust bubble.

The picture was taken on four days in February and March 2023 from my south-facing balcony in Berlin (Bortle 6-7), from which the nebula could be seen for about 3 hours in the evening.

Der Rosettennebel (Caldwell 49) ist ein diffuser Emissionsnebel im Sternbild Einhorn. Er liegt 5200 Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von 130 Lichtjahren. Der offene Sternhaufen (NGC 2244) in der Mitte des Nebels ist aus diesem entstanden und bringt ihn als ionisierende Quelle zum leuchten. Insgesamt besitzt er eine Masse von 10.000 Sonnenmassen und besteht aus H-II (ionisierter atomarer Wasserstoff).Messungen des Chandra-Teleskops haben ergeben, dass sich in den dichten Nebelmassen bis zu 2500 junge Sterne befinden, inklusive zwei massiver O-Typ Sterne, die primär für den Ausstoß der ionisierten Staubblase verantwortlich sind.

Das Bild ist an vier Tagen in Februar und März 2023 von meinem Süd-Balkon in Berlin (Bortle 6-7) enstanden, von dem aus der Nebel abends um die 3 Stunden zu sehen war.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
