Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) through the travel scope from the Courtwood Inn in dark-sky Murphys, CA. The original image was live-stacked without treating the comet; in other words, it lined up the images to stack by aligning the stars. Thus, the comet shows as a small line, since it moved with respect to the stars during the 10 minutes of imaging. Later I tried my hand at redoing the stacking in PixInsight using its ability to align the comet in each image. That revision shows the stars arcing around the comet. In a third revision I tried removing the stars and stacking and aligning stars and just-comet images separately, combining them afterwards.

Description: This revision redid the stacking in PixInsight. The images were aligned so that the comet is what stays in place. The result is the star arcs.

Title: Comet and stars stacked separately, then combined.

Description: In this revision, the stars were removed into their own images, leaving starless comet images. Each set was aligned and stacked separately. (The star set aligned on stars; the comet set aligned on the comet.) The result has streaks, which I need to understand and improve my technique. But in among the streaks you can make out the comet tail.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
