Description

The amazing jellyfish nebula in just 5hrs of data!

Photometric colour analysis:

With the color channels reassigned to the correct emission lines, we have the following normalized intensity histograms:
  • The blue line represents the H-alpha emission, which is typically associated with regions of hydrogen gas ionized by nearby star formation.
  • The red line represents the OIII emission, often found in the shocked gas of supernova remnants.
  • The green line represents the SII emission, which is common in areas with strong stellar winds or supernova remnant

Here we have the original image of the Jellyfish Nebula (IC 443) next to the result of a morphological analysis using edge detection. The edge detection filter highlights the boundaries within the nebula's structure, enhancing the intricate filamentary patterns and different regions within the nebula. This visualization helps in identifying the complex morphology of the nebula and can be particularly useful for studies that focus on the shapes and structures formed by various astrophysical processes. The contrasting colors on the right image indicate the various edges detected in different emission lines, with each color representing a different element or ionization state (H-alpha, OIII, and SII).

The explosion that created the Jellyfish Nebula, also known by its official name IC 443, may have also formed a peculiar object located on the southern edge of the remnant, called CXOU J061705.3+222127, or J0617 for short, likely a rapidly spinning neutron star, or pulsar.
