Description

Messier 13 is a globular cluster and, thanks to its position in the sky, is often majestically called the "Great Grobular Cluster in Hercules". A globular cluster is a sphere-shaped cluster of stars that is actually located outside of its host galaxy - which it orbits. M13 orbits the Milky Way and is located at approximately 22,000 lightyears from us. As one of the most prominent globular clusters in the sky, M13 was also chosen as the target for the "Arecibo message", an encoded message that was beamed into space containing information about the human race, DNA, earth's position, etc. However, due to the high density of the cluster - its several 100,000's of stars are about a 100 times more densely packed than the stars in the sun's immediate neighborhood - the likelihood of (intelligent) life is actually quite low in the cluster.

The picture also shows two "bonus" galaxies: NGC 6207 and IC 4617. Of particular note is IC 46 - a galaxy that appears very dim as it is situated almost 500 million light years from earth. When the captured light from this galaxy departed its host galaxy, life on earth was just undergoing the Cambrian explosion!

Total integration time: 1 hours and 47 minutes, from my rooftop in Tokyo Japan with a Vixen ED81s apochromatic refractor, ZWO ASI1600mm monochrome camera, LRGB filters, on a iOptrom GEM45 mount.
