No trickery here, this only has basic processing, and I almost threw this shot away. Actually, almost didn't even take this data, because the evening was being spoiled by high thin clouds. The scope was already set up, calibrated, flats and darkflats done, scope focused, the run already sequenced, and we were in Escalante with Bortle 2 sky, so I decided to just let it run in spite of the clouds, hoping they would pass. They didn't. The brightest stars are all diffused in all the subs. Astro-purists can rightly criticize this as a garbage shot, spoiled by atmospheric haze.

However, my wife commented that we don't only like pictures of forests on clear days--sometimes a forest in the mist is more interesting. And, seeing Caroline's Rose through the clouds is a natural optical experience, unlike computer-generated diffraction spikes.

Processing was primarily done in PI: WBPP, DBE, SPCC, Blur XT (Correct Only--no star reduction or halo adjustment), Noise XT, and the STF auto-stretch; in Photoshop I cropped it, raised the black point a bit and added a touch of saturation, and that's it.

There you have it--a Rose in the clouds. I imagine Caroline Herschel experienced it as most of us do, in imperfect conditions, yet are still delighted by the wonders in the sky.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
