NGC 4762 and NGC 4754, a galaxy pair in Virgo

NGC 4762 is the iconic edge on galaxy at a distance of ~ 60 million light years in the constellation of Virgo. It is puported to be the flattest known. Being virtually perfectly edge on and so flat it is difficult to know what its morphology is like were we able to see it face on. It is considered to be a lenticular galaxy, with a morphology between a spiral and an elliptical galaxy. This means it has a central bulge but is considered unlikely to have spiral arms. It is also believed that the galaxy consists of four main components — a central bulge, a bar, a thick disc and an outer ring. The galaxy's disc is asymmetric and warped, and there are amazing star tails emanating from it suggesting a previous interaction/ collision with another galaxy. However, nothing can be seen of the interloper now. It is not interacting with the other galaxy that dominates the image, NGC 4754, which is a barred lenticular galaxy and is closer at a distance of 53 million light years. It is ~ 70,000 light years across and considerably smaller than the 150,000+ light year diameter of NGC 4762.
There are so many distant galaxies in this image and they seem to be swarming around their two closer counterparts.
