This is an emission Nebula also referred to as Caldwell 31 and SH 2-229. Objects nearby include: IC410, M38. It is ~ 1500 light years away and 5 light years across.
Processing: The processing accomplished on this beautiful nebula was as follows:
Imaged in my backyard in Tucson, AZ on January 15, 2024.
On this image I used the Antlia Triband filter with the ZWO 2600MC camera.
Taken with the Takahashi FSQ-106.
40 subs at 1000 sec with the Antlia Triband filter.

I perceived this composition as a winged dragon breathing fiery Oiii.
I spent some time to enhance the adjacent and lower nebulosity to add to the presentation.

The sub frames were batch processed with Lights, darks, flats and darkflats using WBPP.

The original master light was cloned and cropped.
DBE was utilized to remove gradients.
Color calibration was applied with the original ColorCalibration process.
I then applied BlurX, NoiseX and StarX ala Russell Croman.
Final stretching of the starless image was accomplished using a combination of GeneralizedHyperbolicStretch and the HistogramTransformation tool.

After stretching, I added NoiseExterminator at default settings.
SHO pallet obtained using Bill Blanshan’s NarrowBandNormalization.
Sharpening was applied using LocalHistogramEqualization, Multiscale Transformation and Unsharp masking.
Stars were stretched and then color adjusted with curves.
The final stars and starless images were recombined with Pixel math.
Finally, star reduction using Bill Blanshan's newer star reduction process.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
