Description

This object is a pair of colliding galaxies located a half billion light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +41 degrees. Nicknamed Mayall's Object, it was discovered by American astronomer Dr. Nicholas Mayall in 1940. This object spans 30 arc-seconds in our apparent view, slightly larger than Saturn to our view. Its true width is almost 100,000 light years. On the left is an edge-on galaxy, which is colliding with the face-on galaxy at right.

The small blue galaxy below and left of Arp 148 is LEDA 2171379. The bright elliptical galaxy to the left (2MASX J11042578+4050290) is about the same distance away as Arp 148. Other small galaxies are visible throughout the image.
