Description

This is M17 in Sagittarius, commonly known as the Swan -- or Omega -- Nebula. Perhaps 2/3's the size of the better-known Orion Nebula, and about four times more distant from the earth (6000 or so light-years, versus 1500 for Orion), the Swan, like Orion, is an active star nursery, its bright core radiating from the energy of hot, relatively young stars, and shielding a number of "proto-stars" that infra-red photography has revealed in its core.

Also, like Orion, M17 is so bright that it's a challenge to process without blowing out the core. This is based on the Hubble palette, but I learned a new technique for applying curves to areas masked with cyan and green color masks, to push the prominent green of the hydrogen towards yellows and reds. The core of the nebula is rich in hydrogen and oxygen, while somewhat lacy sulfur spread throughout the clouds reinforces the detailed waves and ripples in the outer regions.
