Description

Comet Leonard from about a month ago, S. Hemisphere

OTA:……………….PlaneWave 17” f/6.8
Camera:………….FLI ML16803
Observatory:…. Deep Sky West, Chile

EXPOSURES:
1 each L,R,G,B: 60sec
Processed by Alex Woronow (2022) using PixInsight, Topaz

Just when you thought you were done with this thing, another image! This is from a scope in Chile, and the image shows some ripple structures in the tail, particularly the upper part. Also, some complex structures occur in and around the head.

The comet moved about ½ star disk over the period of the four images. I made separate comet-aligned and star-aligned images and then starless and stars-only images from both. After processing, the stars from the star-aligned image were re-introduced into the comet-only image to produce the final product. This approach eliminated some of the strange star artifacts that arise when using the PI comet alignment process.
