Description

11,000 years ago a supernova shone 250 times brighter than Venus - clearly visible in the daytime.  At only 815 light years away this SuperNova must have been an awesome sight.  As the shock wave hit a region of dense gas it was heated and began to glow.  The Pencil Nebula is but a small portion of that supernova in Vela.  The long straight apperance of the brightest section resembles a pencil and was noted by Hershel.  But with today's sensitive equipment, as with so many objects named during the days of visual observations, it has lost most of its pencil-like qualities.
Never the less, the contrast of this shockfront and the Ha background glow make for an interesting FOV.

I shot this in SHO and also shot a decent amount of RGB data, intending to use that for the stars.  But the RGB data was quite good and I felt I could use the SHO and RGB in combination.  I recalled doing this with M1 for the same reason and liking the result.  I tried the exact same comination in Pixelmath and it worked out just how I imagined the image when looking at the raw masters.  That mix is:

Red= Ha*.4 + SII*.2 + Red *.4
Green= Green*.4+OIII*1.2 - SII/3
Blue= OIII*.5 + Blue*.5

SXT was run on this result followed by BXT and NXT.  An RGB master was also created with SXT to separate the stars.  The RGB stars-only data were added to the SHORGB master in Photoshop as a Screen Blend Layer.  Various color and curves adjustments were used to finalize color but the initial Pixelmath blend got me to 80-90% of the final color result.
