Description

M78 is one of a handful of objects that I have not imaged since my early days in this hobby, about 15 years ago, when my imaging camera was a Meade DSI-C. Since the last target I imaged was a dim emission nebula that was a stretch for my current camera (a stock Nikon D5300), I decided that I deserved a "gimme" target that would be relatively easy to image with my rig. So, I decided to return, after a decade and a half, to M78.

M78 is the brightest of a group of closely situated reflection nebulae that includes NGC 2064, NGC 2067 and NGC 2071. All four of these nebulae are simply bright areas within the much larger Orion B molecular cloud complex, which is a vast star-forming region. M78 and the region immediately surrounding it contains 17 Herbig-Haro objects.
