Description

The elusive OU4 with Sh2-129
I was in doubt where to post this, after looking at the picture quality posted and equipment people have as beginners today I started to wonder if I ever will be experienced. All my equipment and software is new to me and after a 13 years break I feel like beginner again. It sure is an intimidating high level for beginners these days…anyway I’ll post it here.

What can I say, this target is dimmer than a mouses fingerprint on an abandon handrail (thanks Bob). Where is it, where is it?? Am I on the right place…! It’s like photographing in the blind.

I don’t know what I was thinking starting this project as a “in between” project while waiting for my tilt unit to arrive. Obviously I am not very good at researching my targets beforehand, seeing how dim this actually was I had never started. But it is hard to stop when first started and having fun.

After more than hours and hours of exposure (and a lot of cold Mythos), in a middle of a heatwave, and wildfire smoke, it’s time to throw in the damp towel.
I probably re-processed the damn thing at least 17 times, so don’t ask for processing steps. It is still very noisy. What is it with OIii and noise? Have I mounted the filter the wrong way, or forgot to take it out of the plastic wrapper before mounting it are thoughts passing trough my mind when looking at the image…

I let ASTAP under my supervision sort out the 95% best sub frames.
Anyway data collection was done with 300 and 600 sec exposures. I could not detect any visible improvement in the 600 sec vs 300 sec. I should probably have continued on with 300 sec.

Calibration and Image processing done in Siril, starting to learn but long way to go go. Combined and mapped as HOO.
