Description

This is NGC 891, an edge on spiral galaxy in Andromeda.  It is sometimes called "The UFO Galaxy".  I believe that you can also see an image of this galaxy in the closing credits of the original Outer Limits TV show.

I acquired the data for this image over 3 nights, from September 24 though 26, 2022 from our property just outside of Ellensburg, WA.

I used the data for this image for a live processing session at the 2/21/2023 meeting of the Seattle Astronomical Society's Astrophotography Special Interest Group.  I prepared the data in advance by calibrating, and integrating it into master files for the Luminance, Red, Green and Blue channels.  All the rest of the processing was done live over Zoom during the meeting to demonstrate using PixInsight and a few 3rd party plug-ins, such as the XTerminator tools by RC-Astro.  The result that I am publishing here is where we ended up at the end of the meeting.

This is a pretty simple field, so there isn't a bunch of nebulosity to explore, etc., and there doesn't appear to be any IFN in the field.  There are, however, many small and faint galaxies in the background and some of them turned out pretty nice.

The capture details are as follows:

Telescope: Astro-Physics AP130GTX @ F/6.3
Camera: QSI 690 wsg-8 with Astrodon Gen2 filters
Mount: Astro-Physics AP1600GTO-CP4-AE
Guiding: PHD2 with Starlight Xpress Ultrastar
Subs: 76x600 luminance, 26x300 red, 25x300 green, 26x300 blue

Processed in PixInsight.
