NGC 5457 / M101 - The Pinwheel Galaxy

Revision title: NGC 5457 / M101 - The Pinwheel Galaxy - Supernova SN 2023ixf

I've taken some EAA pics of M101 in the past that were okay considering the short exposures and short integration time. This galaxy season I decided to go after M101 with my new IDAS LPS D3 Filter which blocks LED light as well. Living in Burlington which is Bortle 7/8, our street lamps are LED and the highway that runs through the city is low sodium. I'm impressed with the filter and like it much more than the Optolong L-Pro I was using before.

I managed to get nearly 9 hours of integration time, but could have had almost 13. I had to throw away nearly 4 hours of subs because my AVX mount was poorly calibrated the first night (that's on me), and it was windy, so half the subs went out the window. Second night was better. My AVX has been great to me over the years but I’m gleefully eyeing the ZWO AM5 when my budget permits to be my next mount adventure.

I plan on using my Askar Ha+Oiii 6nm filter to add some Ha to it later as well.

Description: I added Ha to the image but also lucked out a little bit. It just so happened my Askar Magic 6nm Ha+Oiii nights were May 25/26th when the supernova SN 2023ixf was very close or at it's peak magnitude (10.8).

I put this collage together showing the original galaxy image I did from April's data and the new Ha data added from May 25/26th which includes the supernova. The collage includes separate close up images showing the supernova SN 2023ixf.
