Description

This spiral galaxy is located 100 million light years away in the constellation of Leo Minor at a declination of +37 degrees.  It is a magnitude 11 galaxy which spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a Milky Way like diameter of 120,000 light years.

We are looking at this galaxy at about 30 degrees from edge-on.  Despite the higher angle, the structure and color of the disk is clearly visible to us.  Several faint HII regions are seen on the near (lower right) disk side.  The dust lanes are clear but the arms are a bit mottled, appearing to extend out 360 degrees in circumference around the core.

This is the second image of this galaxy on Astrobin – the first was a mono image by my friend @FranckIM06 almost 10 years ago, seen here.

A very Merry Christmas to everyone out there!  Peace on Earth seems elusive these days - hopefully 2023 will see more of that for us.
