Description

NGC 5131 and NGC 5132  an interacting pair of galaxies located in the constellation Eridanus. They are at a distance of approximately 60 million light-years from Earth. NGC 5131 is the larger of the two galaxies with a bright central region containing star-forming regions. It also contains dust lanes and dark patches, which are indicative of ongoing processes of star formation and evolution. NGC 5132, on the other hand, is an elliptical galaxy, which appears to have been shaped by the interactions with its companion galaxy, NGC 5131. The gravitational forces between the two galaxies have distorted the shape of NGC 5132, creating a tidal tail of stars and gas in the direction of NGC 5131.
