Description

Mildly amusing backstory:

So I'm sitting at home today and randomly decide to check for upcoming ISS transits on transit-finder.com. Turns out that there is one just 10 miles from my house in an hour! Surely I can't get over there, find a spot, set everything up and be ready in an hour?!

I decide to go for it anyway. I start loading up the car with telescope gear in a mad rush. Then I noticed the clouds, so many clouds, creeping steadily in from the south. Oh well, might as well keep going now..

I get to the spot that I had picked out on Google Maps, right on the predicted centerline. The area is a bit sketchy but with 20 mins to go it will have to do. I unload and get set up.. and discover that I forgot to pack the mount's 12v power cable! I guess I'll be tracking the sun the old fashioned way.

The cloud is now so thick that I can't get the sun on the sensor anyway so it's all looking like a bit of a fail. With 5 minutes to go the cloud opens a little and I find the disc and try to get the exposure dialed in. The brightness level is all over the place as clouds speed by intermittently. Next struggle is the focus .. there is nothing to focus on, no big sun spots, so I try to sharpen up the edge of the disc as best as I can.

1 minute to go now, reposition manually to center on the sensor. 30 seconds to go, start the video capture in SharpCap and cross fingers..

3 .. 2 ..1 .. whoosh! There it goes, bang on time, flashing by. It's all over in less than a second.
