Description

This object, also known as NGC 628, is a classic face-on grand design spiral galaxy located 23 million light years away in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of +16 degrees. This galaxy spans 10 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.

This object is nicknamed the Phantom Galaxy because its very low surface brightness makes it the most difficult Messier object to observe. The galaxy contains two clearly defined spiral arms and is one of the best examples of a grand design spiral galaxy. The arms extend out from the core for almost 2 complete revolutions. In their 2nd revolution each arm breaks up quite a bit.

Many blue star clusters and red HII regions can be seen. Dark dust lanes are present but not prominent in this galaxy. The bright orange star to the lower right, which looks a bit out of round, is a multiple star system.
