Description

Comet C/2019/Y4 ATLAS up ‘close and personal’ as it races towards perihelion in May, assuming it doesn’t disintegrate before then. The comet has been brightening rapidly and shows some evidence of breaking up in the extending nucleus - see astronomerstelegram.org.

My image is definitely not scientific, but not bad considering it is taken using my old 8” LX5 SCT with DSI-2C OSC, and approximate ‘comet guiding’ using PHD (RMS 0.84”). The image has been severely stretched, saturated, and cropped (using iOS) to bring out the detail in the core and distinctive colour of the out gassing coma. I’ll try reprocessing this with StarTools to see if I can improve this.
