Description

Seeing was pretty decent and might have been better, but I made a series of rookie mistakes. It has been two years since I have done any imaging in which I experienced quickly falling temperatures and also have been outside for more than four or five hours. The combination led to dewing, but it also meant that I was dealing with more severe focus changes than I'm use to dealing with. No, seeing wasn't deteriorating, but my attention to detail was. I probably missed an hour of decent seeing before realizing just how massive the change in focus had become. Additionally, dew, which has only really ever been a minor a problem despite my otherwise humid environment, became a major concern. Dew shields had always been (just) enough for planetary imaging. Not this night. By the time I realized I was getting significantly fewer frames per second, my corrector looked as if it had iced over because the dew was so pervasive. I cranked the dew heater (integrated with the dew shield) to its highest level, which dissipated the dew. I do not know whether this small amount of heat creates its own local seeing conditions in and around the telescope , but we can all agree it is not exactly an ideal situation. If nothing else, this was a reminder that planetary imaging takes practice and a good intro what I'll have to deal with for Mars later this year and Jupiter in the coming years. Attention to detail is a must and I lacked it this evening.
