Milky Way - Galactic Centre

A three panel mosaic of the Milky Way oriented around the Galactic Centre and extending from Sagitta on the left (north east) to Carina on the right (south west). Data was captured at the Astronomical Society of NSW, Australia (ASNSW) dark sky site located at Illford in NSW, approximately 3 hours drive west of Sydney. Rated at Bortle 2 skies, it is an ideal site for observing and imaging the southern Milky Way.

This image is a three panel panorama taken with a Canon 60Da and Samyang 14mm f2.8 lens mounted on a Skywatcher Star Adventurer tracking mount. Each panel in the panorama has been processed from 10 x 180 second sub frames and 10 darks. Software used to process the image was Pixinsight 1.8.9 for calibration, integration and post processing and PTGui for stitching the panels together. To assemble the panels, a basic processing was applied in Pixinsight to normalise the panels and then transferred to PTGui to assemble into the panorama. Following the stitching together of the panels in PTGui, final post processing was completed in Pixinsight.

Revision B (and the mouse over) shows an annotated image with the names of the major deep sky objects that can be seen across the plane of the Milky Way. Also shown in the marked up annotation is the site of the Galactic Centre which is home to the black hole around which our galaxy is rotating at a speed of approximately 230 kilometers per second. Make sure to take the time to scan through the full resolution version of the image and particularly the annotated version to see where the major objects are. Maybe there are some good targets for the next imaging session?
