Description

An extremely fun project with my new gear!

when they went on sale, I decided to buy a Sky Watcher imaging Newtonian, to replace the short-lived, hyper star set up in my collection. Love the speed of the hyperstar, but it does not have enough reach compared to my wide field Samyang. With galaxy season rapidly approaching I did not want to be on the sidelines for several months of clear skies after a cloudy winter.

So I decided to test out both the six and eight inch models, and was so pleased to discover that my ZWO AM5 could pilot this big of a tube so long as I have the right counter weighting in place.

I tested out the set up as just a brief guiding and collimation test, but when the data looked good despite the full moon, I decided to keep shooting. This is the result.

Processed entirely in PixInsight; Learned a lot about multi scale gradient removal, multi scale median transform, and generalized hyperbolic stretching to bring out my data. Really pleased.

Almost 7 hours shot under nearly 100% moon from my Bortle 7 backyard in Phoenix. Can’t wait to try this out at a dark site!
