Description

NGC 2857 (also known as Arp 1 and PGC 26666) is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. It was discovered on January 9, 1856, by R. J. Mitchell. It is located 230 Mly away.
Due to its low luminosity, it was identified only nearly one century after the other two large interacting galaxies visible here, NGC 2854 and NGC 2856, that together form the group Arp 285, and are approximately 120Mly away.

The field contains a trove of far away objects: for instance the galaxy PGC 2344289 is 1.3 Billion ly away, and PGC 2343045 has a distance of about 900 Million ly.

As remarked by @Gary Imm , the little smudge just below right NGC 2857 is the galaxy SDSS J092445.36+492234.2, that, following from its radial velocity of 50500 km/sec and the Hubble constant, should be at 2.35 Billion ly from us.
