      Description

The supernova remnant G296.5+10.0, located in Centaurus, spans a vast area exceeding 1 degree near Rho Centauri. Initially discovered in 1974, its optical shell has remained unexplored and unimaged until now. To my knowledge, this is the first image ever captured in visible light of this celestial object. Recent studies on G296.5+10.0 have estimated the SNR's distance to be around 1.4 kiloparsecs at the near side of the Carina Arm, with an age of 14,000 years. Despite several investigations have been conducted on this target since its discovery, the origin of its emissions in radio, gamma, and X-ray wavelengths remains unidentified, contributing to the mystery surrounding this supernova's origin. Notably, G296.5+10.0 intricate filaments bear a resemblance to the elegant form of a Betta Fish (scientifically known as Betta Splendens or Siamese Fighting Fish, a popular freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia), drifting amidst the vast cosmic emptiness.
Many thanks to Sakib Rasool for suggesting me this elusive target.
