Description

The California Nebula, cataloged as NGC 1499, is a nearby emission nebula in Perseus.   It's between 1000 and 1500 light years distant, and 100 light years long.   It's a big nebula, extending 2.5 degrees on the sky.   In this OSC narrow field view, only ~1 degree of the nebula is shown, centered roughly on the faint galaxy IC 2005.

There are several galaxies (I count 9) in the far background of the field, IC 2005 being the most prominent one.   It's an elliptical, so it's not very interesting.   A couple of the other galaxies in the field show better structural details, even if they are slightly fainter.   Overall, NGC 1499 is a bit mundane looking, lacking some of the dramatic edges and pillars seen in other HII regions.   The nebula does have some subtle color variations visible around the outer edges.
