Description

Got a chance to go to my club's dark site a couple weekends ago during the new moon. The Bortle 2 skies were very appreciated, vs my normal Bortle 8/9. Such a huge difference in sky quality, star density, and the sheer amount of things you can see with just your naked eye. My daughter got to see the Milky Way and its core through the telescope for the first time and was simply awestruck. I'm so glad I can share the love of the skies and this hobby with her. While we slept, I had my scope and mount aimed at M45.
This is one of my favorite objects in the sky, not just because of its painting-like beauty, but also because of the ties to so many different cultures throughout history. The Greeks called this constellation the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, the Japanese called it Subaru, to the Aztecs its known as Tiānquiztli, to the Norse they are Freya's Hens, and so many more stories and folklore. In the old days, they used M45 to test keenness of the eyes depending on how many of the stars you could see.
This was taken with my Nikon D800 and the Explore Scientific 127ED FCD-100. 72x120s, about 2 and half hours worth of images. Heavily cropped due to vignetting. Got some interesting reflections, or whatever those blue artifacts are. Can't wait to take the trip back out there.
