Description

Observed on 18 May 2023 at the Texas Star Party with a 22” Obsession UC Dobsonian. This large bright globular cluster is patchy and rather diffuse. It does not concentrate. I resolved many individual stars.

M4 was the first cluster resolved by Charles Messier. It is obscured by heavy clouds of dark interstellar matter.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: IX
Distance: 7,176 LY
Type: Halo Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Just above the MW disc and about 1/3 of the way to the core.
Any stars resolved: Yes
Undergoing Core Collapse: No
