Description

NGC1365 is a double-barred spiral galaxy that lies about 75 million light years away from us in the constellation Fornax.  There is an inner bar structure that you can just identify in the image tilted up at a roughly 80 degree angle.  The outer bar structure is nearly vertical at about a 10 degree angle.  It is thought that the inner bar is rotating faster than the outer bar which causes the diagonal shape seen in images.  The outer arms of the galaxy complete one orbit every roughly 350 million years.

NGC1365 and other galaxies of its type have been the subject of much research in recent years with new observations indicating that the Milky Way could also be a barred spiral galaxy.  These type of galaxies are quite common, with thirds of spiral galaxies being barred according to recent estimates.  Understanding barred galaxies can help astronomers understand our own galactic home.

The weather has finally cleared out in Chile, and the seeing is slowly improving.  This image was captured over this past dark cycle over a very efficient week of data collection.
