Description

Imaged Venus on the evening of March 30, 2023 (March 31st in UTC).  Venus had a diameter of 13.9" and was 78% illuminated.

Venus will be favorably placed in the Western evening sky at reasonable altitude for the 2023 Venus evening apparition.  My project for this apparition is to work on imaging in UV to try and capture cloud features.  I've been practicing since mid-March for the first time with a Astrodon Johnson/Cousins Photometric UV filter, and this was my first decent UV image of Venus showing what I believe to be some low-res cloud features.  I started out with my C8 at F/20 and a ZWO ASI178MM, but had poor results since the ideal F# is closer to 10 for the 178's pixel size of 2.4 mm.  I reconfigured to F/10 by removing the 2x barlow I typically use and the images improved with a hint of contrast features in the 178MM images.  I switched over to my trusty 290MM and the contrast was much improved, so I'm sticking with the 290MM for now.   Seeing has been horrible the past month, and if/when it settles down I plan to try imaging at F/15 or F/20 again.  At this point, I'm just excited to see some features in the UV images that resemble the cloud patterns I see in some of the great images by more skilled folks here on Astrobin...

Imaged with a C8 Evo, ZWO ADC, Astrodon Johnson/Cousins Photometric UV and ZWO IR 850nm pass filters, and ZWO ASI290MM. Imaging train was configured to give me ~F/10 (FL=2000 mm). Image capture using Firecapture with the following gain/exposure settings:  UV: g=250, 7.5ms; IR:  g=275, 0.8 ms .  Stacking in AutoStakkert3 (best 5% of 20000 frames captured over ~180 seconds). De-rotated images in WinJupos.  Generated false RGB in WinJupos (R=IR, no green, B=UV).
