Description

The Antennae Galaxies (NGC4038 and NGC4039) from TDS in CA.  These two galaxies are about 45M light years distant and are an interacting pair.  NGC4038 was a barred spiral and NGC4039 was a spiral galaxy.  They passed through each other about 600M LY ago.  They are both going through a starburst activity that can be seen in the pink regions of the galaxies.  The tails are formed by stars that have been ejected due to the collision.  Several supernovae have been detected within these galaxies.  In about 400M ly the two nuclei should combine into one and simulations indicate that the result should be a large elliptical galaxy.
