Description

I capture some data on NGC40 back in July to test out my new duoband narrow band filter (OIII+H-alpha and H-beta). I decided to try and combine this with some partially processed RGB (UV/IR Cut filter) color data from back in August of 2020. After several attempts, I got an acceptable result with stars and star colors from the 2020 data and the nebula from a combination of the UV/IR cut and the duoband filter data. I'm still honing my techniques on combining image data from different filters!

Take a look at version B, which is enlarged 200% to make the fine detail in the nebula easier to see.

NGC40 is about 6500 light years away from us and the bright core is roughly 2.2 by 1.5 light years across. It is exceptionally bright in Hydrogen alpha, giving it an intense red color. Because of this, when imaging with an RGB camera, or LRGB filters, it is difficult to show detail in the nebula without a lot of tinkering with the color. I solved this by significantly desaturating the nebula in red only.
