Description

One of the brightest spirals visible, NGC 253, the Sculptor galaxy, is a close ~11 Million light-years away.   One of the dustiest galaxies in the sky, it's about ~70K light-years in diameter.  The galaxy is a strong emitter of X-rays and gamma rays, thought to be associated with one or more black holes in the core.

Being so large, NGC 253 gives up plenty of detail; this makes up for a somewhat lower placement in the sky (for us northern observers).
