Description

Ever since my eyes landed on the Hanle monastery, I was so much intrigued about it's history.
Although I had seen the Stakna monastery in the start of the trip, but something about this monastery screams ancient and mysteries, probably because the lack of people around it, as it is so far from the city, 255 km southeast of Leh to be exact.

It is said that it is home to about ten monks while another 33 or so come regularly for prayers. During the night time when I was shooting the trails, I became curios about the only one lit window.

May be there was only one monk at the whole monastery, may be all the other monks are sleeping and he is doing some other practices, it's just interesting to think about all of the possibilities.
The main monastery, one of the largest and best known of Ladakh's monasteries, was built under the patronage of the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal (r. c. 1616-1642 CE), who tragically died at

Hanle on his return from an expedition against the Mongols, who had occupied Tsang and were threatening Ladakh.
