Description

The Great Orion Nebula is a famous area of the night sky in that it is one of a handfull of nebulae that is
visible to the naked eye, and lies in Orion’s ‘sword’. It is the closest region of active star formation to us
at 1.344 ly, and has been studied intensely by astronomers. It has yielded much valuable information on
star and planet formation within a large gas and dust nebula. Within the brightest area of the nebula lies
the ‘Trapezium’ open cluster, a group of 4, very hot, very bright and massive stars, several of which have
been found to be binaries. They are of spectral classes O & B, and are attributed to the bright illumination
of the nebula.

The Running Man Nebula is the popular name given to a very  complex object that has both reflection and
emission characteristics, and is assigned 3 NGC listings: 1973, 1975 and 1977. They are separated by the
darker nebula that gives the object its name. In addition, it hosts the open star cluster, NGC 1981. It lies
about 1,500 ly away. Unlike the G.O.N., this is a difficult target to observe with amateur telescopes. The
region isbelieved to be illuminated and heated by the star, 42 Orionis, a class B star that emits UV light strongly.
