Description

This is a 2 panel mosaic of our neighbor - M31, the Andromeda Galaxy - which is around 2.5 million lightyears away from us. It is estimated to contain around 1 trillion stars - about twice the number of stars in our Milky Way.

The RGB data for this image was captured during an unusually long streak of five consecutive clear nights around new moon in September 2020. After that it took me over a month to capture the H-alpha data due to weeks of bad weather. All in all I ended up with around 13.8h of RGB and 8.7h of H-alpha per panel, summing all up to a total of just shy of 45 h of exposure time.

This is to date by far my biggest project, both regarding acquisition time as well as the time that went into processing the data until I was almost satisfied. I still feel like the colors in the outer regions of the galaxy are off but I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. However what I'm really happy about is that I finally found a way to greatly reduce the chromatic aberation around stars which made the entire starfield look way too blue. I think that overall the stars now look much more natural. Also I am happy with the way the sharpening turned out, nicely bringing out details in the dustlanes, the HII-regions and the blue starfields in the outer spirals arms while simultaneously adding a nice, even grain to the image.

Overall I am happy with the way the image turned out and I did learn a lot along the way.
