Description

34,000 light years from earth, Messier 3 (M3 or NGC 5272), at 11.4 billion years old with 500,000 stars, is one of the largest and brightest globular clusters in the northern constellation of Canes Venatici.  Uniquely, it contains at least 274 variable stars.

Many amateur astronomers consider it one of the finest northern globular clusters, following only Messier 13 (Hercules Globular Cluster).  M3 has an apparent magnitude of 6.2, making it a difficult naked eye target even with dark conditions.  With a moderate-sized telescope, the cluster is fully defined.

This image was captured from my backyard using a SW Esprit 120ED scope and ASI2600MC Pro camera riding a SW EQ6r Pro mount.  66 subs @ 120".  134 subs @ 60".  Total of 4.4 hrs using an LPro filter.  Image acquisition using APT & PHD2.  Processed manually with PixInsight.
