Description

I did a galaxy cluster a while ago in starless inverted mono. It seems most followers do not like this kind of shot given the 'likes', but I think it is the best way to show those little fuzzy spots that mean so much when defining our place in the universe. So I included the starless inverted mono image in the mouse-over version.

WBL stands for 'The Catalog of Nearby Poor Clusters of Galaxies of White et al. (1999)' which was previously unknown to me. It is also entry 1615.8+3505 in the Zwicky galaxy cluster listing. WBL 612 includes galaxies NGC 6105, 6107, 6108, 6109, 6110, 6112, 6114, and 6116. The whole group seems to be referred to by its brightest member NGC 6107. The approximate distance to the group is 400 million light years.

When I was creating this project in NINA, I called it NGC 6112. But 6112 is one of the more boring galaxies in the shot. The jewel in this field of view is the beautiful NGC 6116. What a tremendous little symmetrical spiral structure. I have searched for other images of this galaxy on Astrobin and found only wide field shots. As far as I can tell, this is the best representation of this object to date on this site. If that is true, some of the astrophotographers with longer scopes need to take a look at this one! Runners up are NGC 6108 followed by NGC 6105.
