Description

M42 or the Orion Nebula is the closest area of massive star formation to the earth at 1344 ly's away. The central part of the nebula is the Trapezium, named that for the asterism formed by it's primary four stars.  The Trapezium is a part of the larger Orion Nebula Cluster which spans a diameter of 20 ly's and may contain up to 2800 stars.

The master frames of this image were combined using the Pixinsight HDR composition tool which combines the information from images taken with descending exposure times to replace the regions of saturation with the areas of unsaturated data in the images with descending exposure times.
