Description

A number of my Astrobin friends, primarily in northern Europe, talk about the need to stop imaging as summer approaches.  For those of us that live further south, that was an unusual concept when I first discussed it with them a few years ago.  I knew that the days would become longer towards the Arctic Circle, but I didn't really understand the details as it affects astrophotography.

I put this simple (approximate) map together to show the amount of imaging time today, about 1 month before the summer solstice.  I used nautical darkness (about 1 hour after sunset and before sunrise) as a proxy for imaging time.

As shown by the map, astrophotographers who live above +54 degrees latitude are really impacted by the summer season.

Sometimes I complain in the summer about the extreme summer nighttime heat, humidity, and insects here at about the +30 latitude.  But I should just be happy to have some darkness this time of year.
