Description

The Rosette Nebula (catalogued as Caldwell 49 and NGC 2237) is an HII region located in Monoceros.  The stars of the open cluster (Caldwell 50 and NGC 2244) at the center of the nebulosity formed from the nebula's matter.  Massive and hot, the stars of the cluster release sufficient energy to ionize a significant part of the surrounding nebula.  The cluster and nebula are 5,000 light-years from Earth and the nebula is 130 light years in diameter.
