Description

The "Soul Nebula” ,also known as IC 1848/Sh2-199/LBN 667 and Westerhout 5, is an emission nebula with an associated cluster of young hot stars located ~6,500 light-years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia. The IC 1848 designtion actually refers to an open cluster embedded in the nebula but is most often referenced to identify this target.

The nebula is about 100 light years across in size.  It is often associated with the Heart Nebula (IC1805) which is another famous object which is located ~2.5 degrees away in the sky.
These two regions of nebulosity are connected by a bridge of material and are illuminated by stars that are only about a million years old. (Newborns when compared to our Sun, which is estimated to be approximately 5 billion years old.)
