Description

NGC 1491 Fossil Footprint Nebula
Unfortunately I didn't frame this image very well. The toes of the footprint are cut off a bit.  I centered the bright area of the nebula before I realized that the footprint had toes.

The ForaxX palette by itself wasn't good so I combined the SHO and ForaxX palettes for Revision B and it turned out pretty good except for artifacts.

Revision D: I re-centered this image so the entire foot is visible.  I added more narrowband subs to bring out the faint nebulosity. For some reason I'm getting artifacts around my stars. I'm using StarXterminator to remove the stars very early and adding them back in when all the processing is done. Not sure why I'm getting the artifacts. I've taken the R,G,B images early in the evening so the FWHM and eccentricity is not as good as it could be. I may redo the R,G,B used for the stars, I will do this when the telescope is pointed near the meridian.

Revision F: I followed the "less is more" and processed this image with fewer step. I believe I've been overprocessing my images and this one has a more natural look. I hope you feel the same way.
The stars still have some strange color artifacts but I may be able to fix this with more R,G,B images, it the sky clears.

Revision G: I reprocessed this image using an HSO palette. I like the way this palette gives the center of the nebula a lot of depth and definition. I still followed the 'Less is more' and kept my processing to a minimum.

Revision I: Reprocessed again using a custom SHO + ForaxX Palette. The center of the nebula lost some of the depth depth but brought back more of the colors. Again I kept the processing to a minimum. Last night I tried to redo the R,G,B filter images but the low temperature (16 def F) froze up my electronic filter wheel. I will give it another try tonight, it's not supposed to be quite as cold. Hopefully it will be a clear night.

Revision J: I added more Ha and R,G,B for the stars. I made some alterations to the palette to bring out more blue in the center areas. I have some coma in my stars, I think the very cold weather we have been having has changed the dimensions of my newtonian tube. Last night my electronic filter wheel was locking up again. Tonight will be warmer so I will give it another try on a new image, in the end I will have to take it apart and diagnose the problem.
