Description

NGC 4449 is an irregular galaxy in the constellation of Canis Minor. It is known for its chaotic structure and for being very similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud, although it is much further away. NGC 4449 is about 12 million light-years from Earth.

One of the most interesting features of NGC 4449 is its intense star formation activity. This galaxy contains extremely bright and dense star-forming regions, known as H II regions, where ionised hydrogen gas is abundant due to the ultraviolet radiation emitted by young massive stars. NGC 4449 also contains a rich population of young stars, star clusters and supernova remnants.
