Description

I had big plans for an astrophotography long weekend in the Eastern Sierra to coincide with the 2023 Perseids. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate and the only clear night sky I got was in the early hours of August 12th, but I was still able to get a good view of the Perseids even though it was a night before the maximum. I headed out to the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Preserve and set up on the beach on the south shore of the lake amidst the tufa towers. There were a few other people there with the same idea which made for a sociable night under the stars.

I struggled to get decent flats with the 14mm Rokinon so I ended up using the optics adjustment in Lightroom. The 138 total frames (what I managed to get before the Moon interfered too much) were stacked in Siril then the stars (rather messy in this lens) separated out and the nebula etc processed separately. Stars and meteors (isolated from individual frames) were then added back in Photoshop, along with the foreground (5 minutes, ISO 100)
