Description

Leo Triplet (M65, M66 NGC 3628).  Thanks to a bad run of weather, smoke, travel, and equipment mishaps, this is the first image I've posted in many months.  It also represents a big change--I've put my C6 Hyperstar rig to the side and I've begun working with a more traditional (and somewhat more reliable) refractor set-up.

This image captures first light from my new Askar FRA500, which arrived in March 2023. I was so eager to put it to use when it arrived--and yet reluctant to detach the ASI183MC Pro that was integral to my Hyperstar rig--that I decided to shoot with a rarely-used un-cooled planetary camera (ASI585MC) that was lying around. The night was a success--the new scope worked great--but the resulting image, which reflects about 3 hours of integration, was extremely noisy, and it didn't seem worthy of further investment.  Months later, bad viewing conditions continued and I was in need of an astrophotography project, so  I completed a set of calibration frames to cancel out some of the noise, and processed this final image. It's not a masterpiece, but I'm glad to make good use of my test data and share this image with you.
