Description

An irregular dwarf galaxy the SMC is thought to be a former satellite of the Large Magellanic Cloud. It has actually collided with the latter in the past and is split in two - unfortunately the smaller remnant lies directly behind the larger in our line of sight. Data from 2006 suggests it is moving to fast to really be a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way and is just moving past. I could not find a more recent study about this.

As a classical southern hemisphere target I just had to shoot this from Namibia - in hindsight, there are probably more spectacular targets, and this really wasn't the best place for it as it's quite low in the sky in Namibia.
