IC 4628 is a powder-puff: relatively featureless and uninteresting at a moderate-to-fine scale—at least within the coverage of this image. Hydrogen-alpha overwhelming dominates this target, with minor contributions from OIII and SII. So, after a pile of work to boost color contrast, brightness contrast, black/white point manipulations, …, I obtained the base image shown in this blinked pair. That was, from my perspective as a lover of fine detail, a grand waste of time and effort. So I embarked on a quest to use “style transfer”, a “Generative Adversarial Network” artificial intelligence tool to take the essence of one image (called “texture”) and impose it on the base content of another. After a couple of days of trying various texture and algorithms, I settled on a texture image called “Smoke.” The other half the blinked image shows the result.

Enjoy!

Alex
