Description

Great transparency and good seeing on Earth but a misty cloudy day on Mars. This was a last minute decision for another attempt at Mars. Jet stream was predicted to be 40 meters/second by Meteoblue, normally, far too fast for a decent image, but looking up at the sky from my front terrace, the stars seemed very stable. Perhaps meteoblue was wrong? So I quickly uncovered the  Dobson, slewed to Mars and started shooting as it was at 74 degrees and descending.  Things looked pretty stable on the screen, This is the best of eleven takes of 30,000 frames at 140 FPS.

Mars is now at 99%  so slowly exiting opposition, but at magnitude  -1.64 its still very bright and maxing out at 75 degrees here in Spain.

Despite what appears to be plenty of cloud cover around the northern pole and elsewhere, much more detail than my previous attempt. The Vallee Marineris is clearly visible, dead center. with Mount Olympus just visible to the North. What I really liked about this image are the clouds visible around the Northern hood, as well as what I think  are very fine misty bluish clouds to the right and bottom left of the image. I’m guessing that the front on view is blurred in part by similar thin cloud cover on Mars? It is an eerie irony to wait for clouds to clear on Earth so we can image clouds on Mars.

Original processed with PIPP,  Astrostakert, Registax and Photoshop.

Revision B: Astrosurface U3:. Decided to give this  alternative to AS and RS a try. Very pleasantly surprised at the result. Much easier and more robust to use. No need to use Photoshop after Registax. All stacking, wavelets,  sharpening and RGB balancing done with Astrosurface.  For both the original and Astrosurface version  I started with a PIPP processed ser file to center the image and throw out bad frames. But, I´ve experimented without PIPP with other files and it seems to work just fine.
